Lutfur Rahman Re‑Elected as Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets
Adarshabarta Desk:
Lutfur Rahman has been re‑elected as the Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, as the Aspire Party achieved a commanding victory in the 2026 local elections, winning majority control of the borough council.
The elections took place on 7 May 2026, with the mayoral count held at ExCeL London on Friday 8 May, followed by the full council count on Saturday 9 May. All 45 council seats across 20 wards were contested.
Rahman, standing again for the Aspire Party, received 35,679 votes, defeating Labour’s Sirajul Islam, who secured 19,454 votes. It was a clear and decisive victory for Mayor Lutfur Rahman. The result confirms Rahman’s continued leadership of one of London’s most diverse and densely populated boroughs.
Aspire delivered a dominant performance in the council elections, winning 33 of the 45 seats and securing overall control of the authority. The final results for Tower Hamlets Council are as follows: Aspire Party – 33 seats, Green Party – 5 seats, Labour Party – 5 seats, Conservative Party – 1 seat and Liberal Democrats – 1 seat.
The result marks a significant consolidation of Aspire’s influence in the borough, with opposition parties reduced to small groupings.
Stephen Halsey, Returning Officer for Tower Hamlets, commended the professionalism of staff and partners involved in running the election:
“I want to thank and congratulate everyone who worked on the election for delivering another excellent example of running a sound democratic process. Tower Hamlets has some of the best election processes anywhere in the country. From the 800 people working at our polling stations and at the election count, to our partners including Tower Hamlets Police and the Electoral Commission, we all came together to support people of Tower Hamlets to exercise their democratic right.”
